George Goes Green
George Gets Ingenious
Congratulations to Nicolas Bash '10 for winning the 2009 George Gets Ingenious competition! You can view the winning entry and all of those from 2009 here.
The goal of this year’s George Gets Ingenious contest is to solicit ideas for sustainability that can be implemented here at Washington College to further our aims in the on-going George Goes Green campaign. Ideas will be judged based on the feasibility of implementing them at the college. Therefore they should adhere to the following criteria:
- Creativity. The main idea behind the contest is after all to be innovative and surprise us with something new and unusual, especially if it is unique to WC.
- Applicability. One of the reasons we hold this competition is to gain practical insight from the people who know the college the best. You live and work on campus, and therefore are at an advantage to see the everyday ways in which we can improve.
- Practicality. Can we actually implement the idea? What would it result in, in terms of monetary and resource savings? How large of an impact would it have on the campus at large? At the same time, the element of personal effort can factor in, as individual actions can have a far reaching impact and often demonstrate an impressive amount of dedication.
- Sustainability. Clearly the most important factor is whether something is sustainable over time, and whether it will have a positive effect on the environment.
The following guidelines should also be noted:
- Entries should not currently be in practice at WC.
- Previous entries are permitted to be resubmitted, but only by the person who submitted the idea originally, and only if the idea is reworded to address the other considerations of the competition.
- Entries should be realistic to the extent possible and should include the benefits to the college in accordance with the aims of George Goes Green.
- Details such as method of implementation, background information on the practices suggested, or potential quantitative benefits can only help.
- Entries should be no more than one page long.
- The contest is open to current students, staff, and faculty at WC.
- All entries are due by 4:30 PM on Friday, April 17.
- Send entries to tholste2@washcoll.edu, preferably in .doc format. Entries should include name, email, and class year or job title.
All entries will be judged by a subcommittee of the President’s Climate Action Committee, and the winning entry will be considered for implementation by the committee as a whole.
The winner will receive a prize of $250, to be announced at Earth Day in Fountain Park on Saturday, April 25 and throughout George Goes Green events at the end of April.
