Campus Recycling

Recycling

Recycling is now available in every building on campus. On campus, we recycle plastic and glass bottles, aluminum and tin cans, cardboard, and most types of paper.
This semester there is a recycling competition between dorms of campus. Click here to find out more!

In the academic buildings, bottles and cans can be recycled in the blue bins, while paper can be recycled in the tall green bins or the locked blue paper bins where they are available.

Over the coming academic year, we’ll be phasing in a new recycling plan for dorms. In the Western Shore dorms, Harford, Chester, Sassafras, Worchester, Wicomico, Somerset, East, Middle, West, Talbot, Dorchester, Cecil and Kent bottles and cans now can be recycled in the blue bins. Paper can be recycled in the green Kent County bins as long as it is separated from all other materials. These bins DO NOT have to be taken out to the curb. They will be emptied by Recycling Services employees.
In the dorms that do not yet have the new blue bins, all recycling must still be put out to the curb every Monday night for Kent County to pick up. Blue bins will be available everywhere in Fall 2010. Please remember that Kent County will NOT pick up any recycling that has been placed in plastic bags.

Recycling

When

Bins are collected early Tuesday mornings for dorms, so they should be taken out (as determined by your RAs) to the nearest curb accessible by Kent County Recycling trucks on Monday evenings. Elsewhere on campus, bins are picked up on a daily basis.

Recycling

RA Component

To make recycling as efficient and successful as possible we must have educated students who consistently participate. That requires each Resident Assistant to provide information, coordination, and oversight to their residents. The recycling program could not be successful without your help!

As an RA your responsibilities include making sure that there are enough bins to accommodate the recyclables generated throughout your halls, that students are recycling the appropriate materials (see above), that each bin is taken out as necessary to prevent overflow or foul odors, and that bins are brought back in after curb side pick up and washing. The most effective way to ensure that bins are properly taken out and brought back in is to assign students to these duties weekly.

As an RA you have direct contact with the recycling coordinator about any questions you might have. The recycling coordinator can provide more bins, information, and help organize recycling take out and pick up. Please contact the recycling coordinator, Tara Holste at recycling_coordinator@washcoll.edu.
