George Goes Green

Recycling

Hello, students!
This semester WC's Recycling Program will be running a competition between dorms on campus to determine which dorms have collected the highest quantity of recycling per capita. Whenever recycling is collected in the dorms which have been switched to the new program (zones 2 and 3), every bag of recycling is weighed and recorded, enabling us to determine who is doing the most recycling. Dorms will be recognized each week online at georgegoesgreen.com and in the Elm, and the winning dorm will receive acknowledgment of their achievement all over campus.
Weights will be determined per capita, and some dorms have been combined into teams to even out the numbers. The Western Shore dorms, the Hill dorms, and the Quad dorms are each a team, as are Worchester, Wicomico and Somerset. Points will be subtracted for the "grossness factor" of each bag of recycling- so common non-recyclable items, such as cups, pizza boxes, and milk cartons, will result in fewer points taken, while items such as food (especially food that smells particularly bad), condoms, bodily fluids, used tissues, and other unpleasant things will result in larger numbers of points taken- and if you think these are things that don't belong in recycling bins, you are right, but they are things we find regularly. It's not a pretty sight!
So please, do your part and recycle ONLY empty bottles and cans (glass, plastic, aluminum and tin) in the blue containers around campus, and paper and flattened cardboard boxes in the green containers around campus. A full list of what can and can't be recycled can be found on the Recycling Page.
WC is also competing in Recyclemania, a national competition against other colleges to collect the largest weights of recycling per capita. Last year we got our butts kicked by most of the colleges in our athletic conference- so this year let's try our best to get WC up in the rankings!
Thanks for your participation, and please email Tara Holste, Recycling Coordinator, at recycling_coordinator@washcoll.edu with any questions.
